Padres minors: Leo De Vries, Kale Fountain hit homers, Henry Baez pitches Missions to win
Maybe Leo De Vries is ready for a second wind.
The 18-year-old shortstop hit his eighth homer Sunday, leading high Single-A Fort Wayne to a 9-4 win at Cedar Rapids.
It was De Vries’ third homer of the month. He is hitting .261/.346/.493 for an .839 OPS in July after slogging through May (.599 OPS) and June (.659 OPS).
De Vries (.766 OPS) was 2-for-5 with a walk and a run scored while serving as the DH on Sunday.
Shortstop Brandon Butterworth (.779 OPS) drove in three runs on two hits, including his 11th homer.
Left fielder Kaden Hollow (.762 OPS), first baseman Jack Costello (.623 OPS) and catcher Oswaldo Linares (.598 OPS) all had doubles.
Left-hander Luis Gutierrez (3.66 ERA) allowed all four runs in 5⅔ innings in the start.
Right-hander Garrett Hawkins (1.50 ERA) struck out a batter in a scoreless ninth.
Fort Wayne is 47-48.

SS Cobb Hightower (.663 OPS) went 3-for-5 with a double, a walk, two RBIs and a run scored. RHP Abraham Parra (3-3, 4.83 ERA) struck out five and allowed a run in six innings in the win.
Note: Triple-A El Paso was rained out.
