Padres minors: Michael King begins rehab, Luis Campusano homers in El Paso win

by Jeff Sanders

Michael King took an important step Sunday. It was a rocky step, but the pitch count is what matters on a rehab assignment in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League and King got up to 61 and pitched in the fourth inning in Triple-A El Paso’s 7-6 win at Round Rock.

Now about the results.

King struck out five but allowed six runs on four hits, a walk and a hit batter. Two of the hits left the yard. He also only threw 34 of his 61 pitches for strikes in 3⅓ innings, showing some rust from having not pitched in a game since May 18.

King has been on the injured list with an issue with his long thoracic nerve, believed to be sustained from sleeping awkwardly on his shoulder.

He threw about 40 pitches in a sim game last Monday at Petco Park and could need only one more rehab start if he gets to about 80 pitches in his next start.

That could line up King for a return from the injured list at Dodger Stadium (Aug. 15-17) if he continues to check off boxes.

Left-hander Kyle Hart (3-4, 4.47 ERA) struck out two over three shutout innings in relief for the win. He scattered two hits and a walk.

Catcher Luis Campusano (.987 OPS) drove in two runs on his 16th homer, shortstop Mason McCoy hit his ninth homer and designated hitter Rodolfo Duran (.730 OPS) hit his sixth homer.

El Paso is 58-49.
