Padres minors: Miguel Mendez stands out in TinCaps loss

by Jeff Sanders

After the Padres’ trade deadline activity, Miguel Mendez is among the very best pitching prospects left in the system.

He looked the part Thursday.

The 23-year-old right-hander struck out seven over six strong innings in high Single-A Fort Wayne’s 2-0 loss to visiting Great Lakes.

Mendez (7-3) was a tough-luck loser, allowing one unearned run on two hits and three walks in lowering his ERA to 1.32 in 61⅓ innings since his promotion from Lake Elsinore. Mendez has struck out seven against 24 walks.

Mendez is No. 5 in the Union-Tribune’s post-deadline ranking of Padres prospects.

The Fort Wayne offense managed just two hits, one single each third baseman Jack Costello (.619 OPS) and second baseman Rosman Verdugo (.760 OPS).

The TinCaps are 48-50.
