Padres minors: Post-deadline promotions, Cardell Thibodeaux walks off Storm win

by Jeff Sanders

The Padres shipped out 14 young players on Thursday, including nine prospects ranked inside their top-30 as ranked by Baseball America.

A day later, the chain reaction was felt up and down the system in a moving day of sorts as right-hander Miguel Mendez, ranked No. 4 in MLB.com’s updated assessment of the Padres system moving to Double-A San Antonio headlined a barrage of minor league transactions.

Mendez, 23, is 8-3 with a 1.73 ERA in 72⅔ innings split so far between low Single-A Lake Elsinore and high Single-A Fort Wayne. He has struck out 88 against 28 walks.

Other updated-top-30 prospects on the move include catcher Lamar King Jr. (11) and right-hander Garrett Hawkins (19) moving to high Single-A Fort Wayne and right-hander Eric Yost (22) to Double-A San Antonio.

The newly-acquired Jorge Quintana, a switch-hitting shortstop, is also ranked No. 16 as he joins the Padres system and should join low Single-A Lake Elsinore soon for his full-season debut.

Also, the first 2025 draftees — third baseman Kerrington Cross (seventh round), shortstop Dylan Grego (13th) and outfielder Cardell Thibodeaux (16th) — joined Lake Elsinore on Friday.
