Padres pregame: Jose Iglesias day-to-day, Xander Bogaerts resumes baseball activity
The Padres’ primary shortstop took a significant step toward a return on Wednesday afternoon. The primary backup appears to have dodged a bullet.
Jose Iglesias said X-rays on his left hand hit by a pitch on Tuesday were negative and that he is available off the bench for Wednesday’s 5:40 p.m. start against the Reds. Even better news is the latest imaging of Xander Bogaerts’ left foot revealing enough healing for the five-time Silver Slugger to return to baseball activity.
“Going to be a day-to-day situation, but he met with (the doctor) just a moment ago and he’s going to go as tolerated,” Padres manager Mike Shildt said. “He’s going to go based on how he feels. … There’s been enough healing. He feels good. He’s recovering well to where, like today, he threw, did some side-to-side work, starting to hit, start the baseball progression.
“We’ll see if it gets interrupted or see if it’s able to continue the game momentum.”
The Padres have said all along that they believe Bogaerts could return before the postseason. Iglesias is much closer to helping the Padres again after the pitch off his left hand in the fifth inning Tuesday.
Iglesias stayed in the game and even immediately swiped second base before ultimately exiting the game in the seventh inning as the Padres, in a 2-2, before Luis Arraez pinch-hit for Iglesias in the seventh inning.
“It’s not broken,” Iglesias said. “The x-rays were negative. Just a contusion, but there is some swelling in there for sure but not a big deal. We should be fine.”
Iglesias’ hand was being treated before the game, but he said he’s available off the bench.
After Iglesias’ exit, Jake Cronenworth moved from second to shortstop and Arraez assumed second base, and that is where both Cronenworth and Arraez are to start Wednesday’s game against Reds left-hander Andrew Abbott.
