Pathways to Citizenship honors local pro bono attorney

by News Release

Pathways to Citizenship, a nonprofit law center in Solana Beach, is celebrating the dedication of volunteer attorney Holly Richardson, who uses her legal expertise to guide immigrant families through the complex process of becoming U.S. citizens.

A civil litigator specializing in products liability before joining Pathways, Richardson began volunteering with Pathways in March 2025. Since then, she has helped clients prepare for citizenship and adjustment of status interviews, conducted legal intakes at community partner sites, and represented clients during their USCIS interviews, according to a news release.

“I wanted to use my legal skills to help people in a direct and meaningful way,” said Richardson in the news release. “At Pathways, I can see my impact immediately, whether it’s preparing someone for their interview or standing beside them as they take the final step in their citizenship journey.”

Authorized by the U.S. Department of Justice to practice immigration law, Pathways to Citizenship provides free and low-cost legal and educational services for eligible immigrants across San Diego County. The nonprofit partners with local libraries, faith communities, and service organizations to host citizenship preparation classes, legal clinics, and “Know Your Rights” presentations.

In just a few months, Richardson has already represented eight clients in their citizenship interviews.

“It’s flexible, doesn’t take a big time commitment, and the direct contact with clients is really special,” she said in the news release. “The clients are serious, dedicated, and grateful, and it’s incredibly rewarding to help them succeed.”

Richardson added that Pathways’ mission, to help qualified immigrants navigate the complex legal and cultural pathways to citizenship, resonates deeply with her.

“There’s so much misinformation and fear out there,” she said in the news release. “Being able to tell clients, ‘Hey, this is a place you can come, and we’ll help you where you’re at,’ that’s huge.”

Pathways to Citizenship invites attorneys with an active license to get involved. Volunteer opportunities include one-on-one interview preparation and representation and participation in legal clinics throughout San Diego County.
