Pedestrian struck, killed on I-8 in La Mesa
A person walking on Interstate 8 in La Mesa was struck and killed early Thursday, a California Highway Patrol officer said.
Shortly before 1:20 a.m., 911 callers reported seeing a person walking on the shoulder or in the lanes of eastbound I-8 west of Jackson Drive, Officer Michael Meza said. Within about two minutes, someone called to report that a person had been struck.
The person died at the scene. Meza said the person was an adult, but did not know if the person was male or female.
The driver of the vehicle that struck the person stopped and cooperated with officers, Meza said. The driver was not arrested.
All eastbound lanes were closed for almost two hours for the investigation, and drivers were diverted off the freeway at Spring Street. The freeway reopened about 3:20 a.m.
