Pedestrian walking on I-5 near Camp Pendleton struck and killed
A man walking on Interstate 5 near Camp Pendleton was struck and killed early Monday morning, the California Highway Patrol said.
The incident happened just after 12:20 a.m. on I-5 several hundred feet south of Basilone Road, Officer Jared Grieshaber said. The area is near the San Diego County border with Orange County.
According to Grieshaber, the man had been walking in northbound lanes of the freeway and crossed over to the southbound lanes.
While in the fast lane of the southbound side of the freeway, the pedestrian was struck by a Ford Mustang. He died at the scene. His name has not been released.
A 21-year-old Fontana man had been driving the Mustang. Grieshaber said officers do not suspect alcohol or drugs factored into the crash for the driver.
“Investigators have not determined whether alcohol or drugs played a role for the pedestrian,” he said.
The crash remains under investigation.
