San Diego Fire Department Fire Chief Robert Logan chatted with Alwin Benjamin Holman while at his 100th birthday party held at the Faith Presbyterian Church on Friday, Dec. 26, 2025, in San Diego, CA. Holman, born on December 26th, 1925, was hired as a probationary firefighter in 1951.  On that day he reported to work, which also marked the end of segregation at the San Diego Fire Department. Holman was promoted to battalion chief and later to deputy chief, becoming the first Black individual in California to achieve the rank of deputy chief. He eventually retired in 1983 after thirty-two years of service. (Nelvin C. Cepeda / The San Diego Union-Tribune)
