Point Loma High’s drive for football perfection ends with playoff loss to San Marcos

by Point Loma-Ob Monthly

The Point Loma High Pointers had had a storybook season, going from 6-6 overall last year to 11-0 this year heading into their second-round game in the CIF San Diego Section Division I varsity football playoffs.

But fourth-seeded San Marcos ended the No. 5 Pointers’ streak with a 24-14 victory Nov. 14.

Point Loma had held opponents to fewer than 10 points eight times in the previous 11 games and was headed that way against the host Knights in forging a 7-6 lead at halftime.

But San Marcos took control with a 15-0 run in the third quarter to advance to the semifinals.

Before the game, Point Loma head coach Ryan Price told the Point Loma-OB Monthly that though the Pointers were “striving for the ultimate goal and want to finish the job,” a defeat wouldn’t “take away from everything we’ve accomplished this year.”

“This season is a huge testament to our program’s growth and the hard work of our kids and coaches,” Price said. “Regardless of what happens in the playoffs, we’ll still have a lot to be proud of this season.”
