San Diego homicide detectives are investigating the suspicious death of an infant found inside a portable restroom in the Mission Bay area Monday afternoon, officials said.

Police received a 911 call around 1:30 p.m. after an employee doing a routine cleaning at the restroom near Dana Landing/Sunset Point off West Mission Bay Drive discovered the baby’s body, said acting homicide Lt. Christopher Leahy.

Firefighters, lifeguards and police responded to the scene. Paramedics determined the infant, a boy, had died.

Police said the child appeared to be a newborn and were trying to determine where the mother gave birth.

Homicide detectives have initiated a pediatric death investigation. The identity of the child’s parents is unknown, Leahy said.

Anyone with information about the incident was asked to call the Homicide Unit at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 888-580-8477.
