Police investigating fatal shooting in City Heights
San Diego police are investigating the fatal shooting of a man in a City Heights alley late Tuesday night.
Patrol officers were flagged down shortly before midnight by a resident who heard gunshots fired near 43rd Street and Polk Avenue. Officers checking the area found a person suffering from at least one gunshot wound in the west alley of 43rd Street between University Avenue and Polk Avenue, police said.
Police said the victim was believed to be homeless. He was transported to a hospital but could not be revived. His name was not released pending family notification, police said.
Detectives said the man had been involved in an altercation with another man in the alley prior to the shooting.
Police detained a person of interest, but that person was released pending additional investigation, officials said in a news release.
Detectives planned to interview witnesses and check if there was video taken of the incident. Anyone with information was asked to call the Homicide Unit at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
