San Diego police are trying to locate a hit-and-run driver who struck a teenage girl as she walked in a parking lot near Torrey Pines High School last Friday night.

The 17-year-old suffered minor injuries and was treated at a hospital and released. Police said the collision occurred in a parking lot off Del Mar Heights Road near Carmel County Road in Carmel Valley around 9 p.m. The location is about a half-mile from the high school.

Officers have not yet located the driver and are treating the incident as an assault with a deadly weapon, said police spokesperson Lt. Travis Easter.

Police said the driver was described as a boy thought to be under the age of 18 who was driving a black BMW sedan, Easter said. The victim was walking in a group and was the only one to get hit.

According to a report by 10News, the girl was with friends walking toward a shopping mall following a football game when the collision occurred. A video aired by the station showed the girls wave toward the driver of a vehicle with its headlights on before starting to cross in front of the car.

The video shows the driver then appear to speed toward the group, hitting the girl at the end.

A man identified as a father of one of the girls told 10News that other students said the driver had accelerated toward other pedestrians earlier that night but slammed on the brakes before hitting them.

A police spokesperson said investigators did not have any information about other reports of pedestrians almost being struck by the car.
