Police make arrest after man killed outside Carlsbad library

by Lucas Robinson

One man was killed in an altercation outside a Carlsbad library early Saturday morning and police arrested a suspect a few hours later.

Officers responded to the Georgina Cole Library on Carlsbad Village Drive shortly after 2:15 a.m. after someone reported that a man was attacking people on the rear side of the building.

Officers found a man who was “injured and unconscious” and first responders attempted life-saving measures, but the victim died before he could be taken to a hospital, Carlsbad police said in a news release.

The name of the man who died was not released.

Police said they immediately began an extensive search of the area and located a suspect near Tyler Street and Walnut Avenue, about a mile from the library, around 4:45 a.m.

A 52-year-old man, Homero Duran, was arrested on suspicion of murder. He was being held without bail in Vista jail, according to an online jail log.

“Based on the initial investigation, this was an isolated incident, and there is no ongoing threat to the public,” police said.

Police asked anyone with information about the case to contact Detective Nick Walker at nick.walker@carlsbadca.gov
