Preview: Scuffling USD hosts Anaheim’s Bethesda in nonconference game

Last time out: USD lost for the fifth time in the last six games on Thursday, falling 75-64 at Seattle. The Redhawks went on a 14-0 run to open a 25-10 lead in the first half. USD rallied to take a 47-46 lead on a pair of free throws by Ty-Laur Johnson with 11½ minutes to play in the game and trailed 57-56 with 6:43 to play before Seattle finished on an 18-8 run. Johnson led the Toreros with 18 points but was just 5-for-17 from the field. He had nine assists and two steals as well as four of USD’s 16 turnovers. Forward Assane Diop and guard Juanse Gorosito each had 11 points.

Series history: The teams have played twice before, with USD winning both games.

Toreros update: Diop and Tim Moore Jr. have started the past two games at forward, with Vuk Boskovic and Alejandro Aviles’ playing time dropping off. Johnson, who played 38 minutes at Seattle, is averaging 15.1 points and 4.5 assists a game. Gorosito is the only other Torero averaging in double figures at 10.7 points per game, although guards Toneari Lane (9.8) and the versatile Adrian McIntyre (9.4) are close.

Flames update: Located in Anaheim, Bethesda is a member of the National Christian Collegiate Athletic Association. The Flames are coming off their only win of the season. Point guard Cameron Durr leads the Flames with 14.5 points a game. Forward Edward Spencer is averaging 12.8 points, followed by forward Miles Sulka (10.9) and forward Kenji Cooper (10.5).
