Prop. 50 is necessary ‘to keep our democracy functioning’
Re “Prop. 50 disenfranchises East County voters” (Sept. 29): Laura Koval made it sound like each of our congressional representatives is actually a small-town mayor who only deals with neighborhood issues. That is not the case. The votes of Darrell Issa, Scott Peters and Sara Jacobs affect people in every part of our country. The actions in Texas and a few other Republican-leaning states to gerrymander their congressional districts and give the GOP an advantage is wrong. Proposition 50 is a temporary correction to keep our democracy functioning. Since I am a patriot who believes in God, country and the Constitution, I’m voting Yes on 50.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is right in his ad: We must protect and fight for our democracy. Unfortunately, he does exactly the opposite. Texas Republicans have redistricted to gain five important votes in the House. If California Democrats do not do the same, Democrats not only lose votes in the House, they also ensure that Trump continues to ruin America.
Look at it this way: If you see someone attacking a person, you can do a number of things — watch, turn away, call police, try to stop it. If we do not pass Proposition 50, we are essentially watching America being attacked and doing nothing. A vote for 50 is a vote for democracy and to protect California. Remember, Proposition 50 is temporary — it goes away.
