Roundup: Here’s how San Diego’s high school football teams fared in Week 3
A comfortable 24-point lead had been cut to three early in the fourth quarter before San Marcos High School finally delivered the knockout blow, beating Poway 45-28 on Friday night in a showdown between two of San Diego’s top teams.
“It was an incredible game,” said San Marcos coach Tom Carroll. “We’re up 24-0, then it was 24-21. With 4 1/2 minutes to go, we were still up only three before we finally put it away. Give Poway credit. They never gave up. They could have quit, but they didn’t.”
San Marcos, ranked No. 7 in the county, improved to 2-1. Poway, ranked eighth, fell to 2-1.
Knights quarterback Kreet Makihele threw a pair of touchdown passes to Cutter Vorhees, while Zamar Reese rushed for three scores, including an 80-yarder.
But it was a 45-yard touchdown pass from receiver Ezekiel Mc0Intyre to Reese that Carroll said turned the game.
“We hit ’em with a trick play and struck gold,” Carroll said.
Poway quarterback Noah Schuback, a transfer from Texas, threw a pair of TD passes to James Clifford, one for 34 yards. Schuback also ran for two scores, one for 31 yards. Running back Luke Jorgensen had 190 yards total offense.
“My goodness, Jorgensen is a good player,” Carroll said. “And Schuback makes plays with his arm and feet. There are a lot of good quarterbacks in the county, and Schuback kind of got overlooked because he’s a transfer. But the guy is really good. Our guy (Makihele) is pretty darn good, too.”
