Roundup: Mission Hills QB stars with college coach in attendance; Dons fall to De La Salle
Troy Huhn was nearly perfect throwing the ball. And the Mission Hills High School quarterback did it in front of a full house at Mission Hills — a crowd that included his future college coach, Penn State’s James Franklin.
What Franklin, in Southern California for Saturday’s game against UCLA, saw was a 6-foot-4, 220-pound throwing machine. Huhn completed 19 of 21 passes for 241 yards and touchdown passes of 16 yards to Brayden Roberson and 11 yards to Josh Gonzales as No. 3-ranked Mission Hills (6-0, 1-0) stopped a last-minute 2-point PAT attempt and edged No. 4 La Costa Canyon (5-01, 0-1) 35-34 in the Avocado West League opener.
Huhn completed 90.4% of his passes. No other quarterback in the history of the San Diego Section — not future pros Akili Smith, Alex Smith, Sean Salisbury or current Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin — has thrown for a higher completion percentage with more than 20 attempts.
“Troy is amazing,” said Mission Hills acting head coach DJ Zapata. “The guy is unflappable. Everyone saw how good a player he is, but what you don’t see from the stands is his leadership. He commands the huddle.”
Huhn also ran seven times for 33 yards, including scrambles of 23 and 9 yards that kept drives alive and a 5-yard scramble on third-and-2 in the fourth quarter that eventually led to the go-ahead score.
La Costa Canyon QB Quinn Roth completed 16 of 22 passes for 215 yards and three TDs. Coby Herman rushed 18 times for 159 yards and two TDs. He also caught nine passes for 131 yards and a score.
But in the back-and-forth game, Kai Taitano of Mission Hills stopped LCC’s 2-point conversion attempt with 32 seconds to play.
Neither team punted on Friday, and there were no turnovers.
