SDFC goalkeeper suffered fractured cheekbone in Saturday’s playoff loss

San Diego FC goalkeeper C.J. dos Santos fractured his cheekbone following a collision in the box during Saturday’s opening-round playoff loss to the Portland Timbers, putting his availability for Sunday’s winner-take-all match in jeopardy.

Dos Santos is “undergoing additional evaluation this week,” a statement from the club said. His timeline to return will be determined after he is evaluated.

Dos Santos was injured in the 21st minute of Saturday’s match. He was carted off the pitch and taken to a nearby hospital, but was discharged in time to travel home with the team.

Pablo Sisniega replaced dos Santos in net, marking his first appearance in an MLS match since July 5. Sisniega surrendered Gage Guerra’s goal in stoppage time, then gave up three penalty shots in the shootout. Portland won the penalty shootout 3-2 after the teams played to a 2-2 tie in regulation.

The decisive Game 3 will start at 6 p.m. Sunday from Snapdragon Stadium.
