SDSU could clinch a Mountain West title game berth this weekend. Here’s how.
San Diego State could clinch a berth in the Mountain West championship game as soon as this weekend, although SDSU needs four conference games to fall the right way in order to do it.
It first would require the Aztecs (8-2, 5-1 MW) to take care of business against San Jose State (3-7, 2-4) on Saturday night at Snapdragon Stadium. The Aztecs, who have beaten San Jose State nine of the past 11 meetings, are 11 1/2-point favorites in the game.
SDSU would be 6-1 in conference play with a victory, guaranteeing it finishes conference play either 7-1 or 6-2. The Aztecs conclude the season Oct. 28 at New Mexico (7-3, 4-2), which is among five teams tied for second place with 4-2 conference records.
The other teams tied for second are Boise State (6-4, 4-2), Fresno State (7-3, 4-2), Hawaii (7-3, 4-2) and UNLV (8-2, 4-2).
The Aztecs would then need losses from New Mexico (at Air Force, 4 p.m., CBS Sports Network), Boise State (vs. Colorado State, 4 p.m., Fox Sports 1) and Fresno State (vs. Utah State, 7:30 p.m., CBS Sports Network) to clinch this weekend.
Hawaii plays Friday at UNLV (7:30 p.m., FS1), guaranteeing a third loss for one of the teams.
In this scenario, the Aztecs would have one conference loss and everyone except the Hawaii-UNLV winner would have at least three conference losses.
This is the most simple scenario.
The most complicated scenario: Seven teams still could finish tied for first place at 5-3 — and necessitate studying the six-step Mountain West tiebreaking procedures.
SDSU has the inside track to hosting the Dec. 5 championship game, which it could do by beating both San Jose State and New Mexico to finish the regular season.
