San Diego FC triggers trade option, will keep Oscar Verhoeven beyond 2025

For the second time in as many days, San Diego FC has locked up a defender beyond the 2025 season.

The club exercised its permanent trade option on Wednesday to acquire defender Oscar Verhoeven from the San Jose Earthquakes. San Jose will receive $350,000 in 2026 general allocation money and a future sell and trade percentage. SDFC initially acquired Verhoeven in April as part of a loan that was scheduled to expire after the 2025 season.

“Oscar played a key role for us this year and showed his qualities at this level,” said SDFC Sporting Director Tyler Heaps. “We’re excited to make his move permanent and to continue supporting his development as a professional. We believe he has a bright future with our Club, and we look forward to getting him back to full fitness and having him back with the group for preseason.”

Verhoeven, 19, appeared in 14 matches for SDFC, making 11 starts. A native of Pleasant Hill in the Bay Area, Verhoeven has represented the United States at both the U-17 and U-20 levels.

SDFC’s move came one day after the club exercised its permanent trade option to keep defender Luca Bombino, who was acquired on loan from LAFC in February.

SDFC sent $200,000 in general allocation money to LAFC, which will retain a future sell and trade percentage. LAFC could receive up to another $900,000 in general allocation money depending on how Bombino fares in San Diego.
