San Diego concerts announced by Mumford & Sons and Stray Cats
San Diego’s fall and winter concert calendar is expanding with the announcement of separate new shows here by Mumford & Sons and the Stray Cats at, respectively, Petco Park downtown and The Sound in Del Mar.
The folk-rocking English band Mumford & Sons will headline the third annual Wild Horses Festival at Petco Park on Dec. 27. The lineup at the full-stadium performance also includes Lord Huron, Sierra Ferrell, and Lily Meola.
Ferrell, who performed at the 2023 edition of Wild Horses here in 2023, this year won four Grammy Awards with victories for Best Americana Album, Best American Roots Performance, Best Americana Performance, and Best American Roots Song. That gives her two more career Grammy wins than the headlining Mumford & Sons.
The New York-bred Stray Cats will perform Nov. 20 at The Sound, the $17 million concert venue that opened in 2023 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. the fairgrounds, coincidentally, is where Mumford & Sons performed at the 2019 edition of the KAABOO Del Mar festival.
Brian Setzer talks big band swing, rockabilly romps, 2017 solo plans, Surfdog and more
The Stray Cats’ December concert here is part of the 46-year-old rockabilly trio’s first tour since last August. In February, Stray Cats’ guitarist and lead singer Brian Setzer disclosed that he had been diagnosed with an auto immune disease and was no longer able to play guitar. The disease, which he has not specifically identified, appeared to have struck him toward the end of last year’s Stray Cats’ tour when his hand repeatedly cramped and he found it increasingly challenging to play guitar.
“There is no pain, but it feels like I am wearing a pair of gloves when I try to play,” he wrote in a February social media post. “I have seen some progress in that I can hold a pen and tie my shoes. I know this sounds ridiculous, but I was at a point where I couldn’t even do that.
“Luckily, I have the best hospital in the world down the block from me. It’s called the Mayo Clinic. I know I will beat this, it will just take some time.” In a subsequent post in late March, Setzer wrote that he was making “excellent” progress.
