Sandpiper seafood restaurant in La Jolla Shores to close Nov. 1

by Pam Kragen

Sandpiper Wood Fired Grill & Oysters, a 4-year-old seafood restaurant in La Jolla Shores owned by the George’s at the Cove team of George Hauer and Trey Foshee, will close Nov. 1.

The partners made the decision to permanently close the business at the conclusion of their current lease.

Sandpiper was the second restaurant concept the pair had opened in the space at 2259 Avenida de la Playa in La Jolla.

In 2015, they opened the gourmet taqueria Galaxy Taco there, but they decided to try something new in 2021 because the high cost of labor and ingredients made the economic model for the taco restaurant no longer viable.

After surveying the needs of the community, Hauer and Foshee came up with the Sandpiper concept, which mixes a fresh oyster program with Santa Maria-style wood-grilled seafood, land proteins and vegetables, and an international wine and Champagne list.

The duo did not give a reason for their decision not to renew the lease, but the restaurant is located on a quiet street some distance away from the major tourist destinations farther south in La Jolla Village.

For the final month of service, Sandpiper is paying homage to Galaxy Taco with a special of three tacos (one fish, one mushroom, one birria) and a house margarita for $28.

Also, Sandpiper is offering 50% off all bottles of wine every day. The restaurant opens at 4 p.m. weekdays and noon on weekends. sandpipersd.com
