Santa Ana winds will shift to a rainy New Year’s Eve in San Diego

You’re going to need an umbrella with that New Year’s Eve party outfit.

San Diego County is in for another several days of rain this week, starting Wednesday morning with light showers and getting heavier by evening, according to the National Weather Service.

“It’s going to be much lighter than what we just had,” said Lauren Villafane, a weather service meteorologist.

But first, a light Santa Ana event is going to sweep through the region, keeping temperatures warm.

On Monday morning, valley areas were seeing gusts of 20 to 30 mph, with winds up to 50 mph in the East County mountains, Villafane said. But fire danger in the region remains low due to all the recent moisture.

San Diego is expected to climb to 75 degrees on Tuesday, with daytime highs in the high 60s during the storm later in the week, according to the weather service. New Year’s Eve is forecast to hit a low of 58 downtown. Daytime temperatures will be a bit higher inland.

The first wave of the storm will hit on Wednesday, with a lull on Friday, followed by another round that will last through the weekend. In total, the system is expected to bring 1 to 1.5 inches of moisture to the coast and valleys, and up to 2.25 inches to the mountains.
