Several evaluated after ‘strong odor’ noticed at City Heights elementary school
At least 15 people, including three children, were checked out by medics after a “strong odor” was noticed Friday morning at a City Heights elementary school, authorities said.
Two people — one adult, one child — from Rosa Parks Elementary School were taken to hospitals for further examination, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department officials said.
Multiple fire crews responded just before 9 a.m. after a call came in reporting concerns at the school on Landis Street near Chamoune Avenue, the department said.
Fire officials said responders included a crew that deals with hazardous materials. Students and staffers were cleared from classrooms as crews addressed the incident.
School officials notified parents that, as a precaution, students were moved to the outdoor lunch arbor and the auditorium, where restrooms and water were available, and a cold lunch for students was started.
The school said students would likely not be moved back into classrooms until between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m., and parents were given the option of picking up their children.
The cause of the odor was not determined.
