So labor supports environmentalists? That’s not always the case

by U T Readers

Re “Why war on red tape could end up hurting workers” (July 13): I was thrilled to see that labor supports the environment and CEQA in Lorena Gonzalez’s commentary. As an environmentalist and attorney for many years, that has not been my observation. There have been a couple instances in Oceanside when big labor stepped up at the last minute, ostensibly under CEQA, which could have jeopardized approval of the project, but apparently the intent was to secure project labor agreements. Labor did nothing to advance local environmentalists’ challenges to the projects. In another case, some folks affiliated with labor supported a horrible, dense project on farmland in opposition to the residents while accusing environmental opponents of redlining!

This is not a good look for labor in spite of her bold statements that labor supports the environment. I sure would like to see that happen rather than labor supporting development on every square inch of every property.

Yes, I support labor. Up to a point.
