Speaker at Del Mar Foundation Talk event to present ‘Food as Medicine: Leveraging the microbiome for precision health and food security’
The Del Mar Foundation’s next DMF Talk featuring Dr. Sarah Allard will take place Thursday, Oct. 9 at Del Mar Town Hall, 6 p.m.-8 p.m. (wine and light refreshments beginning at 6 p.m.; Talk beginning at 6:30 p.m.).Allard will present “Food as Medicine: Leveraging the microbiome for precision health and food security.”

Allard is a project scientist at the University of California San Diego, where she studies the role of the microbiome in a range of environments, including the human body, the built environment, aquatic ecosystems, and agricultural soils.
Through the NIH’s Nutrition for Precision Health program, she is working with researchers across the country to understand the key factors that influence individualized responses to diet and work toward developing tailored interventions that improve health and decrease the burden of diet-related diseases, according to a news release.
She has an extensive background in food safety and microbiology, having worked at the FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition and completed her PhD and postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Maryland in plant science and public health.
Allard is the executive director of UCSD’s new Soil Health Center, which seeks to rapidly and meaningfully improve the state of the world’s soils through interdisciplinary innovation and community engagement, improving food security and climate resilience.
DMFTalks, a signature program of the Del Mar Foundation that aims to inspire and inform the Del Mar community, was launched in 2012 to take advantage of the exceptionally deep bench of locally-based creative, intellectual, and scientific leaders, the news release stated.
