Theatre for Young Audiences to present the premiere of ‘Laggie and Grillo: An Unlikely Friendship’

Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA) will present the premiere of Laggie and Grillo: An Unlikely Friendship, an imaginative new production based on the beloved children’s book by acclaimed local author Phyllis Schwartz. Created especially for children ages 3–7, this interactive performance introduces young audiences to the magic of live theatre through playful storytelling, vibrant characters, and hands-on participation, according to a news release.

Rooted in the themes of Schwartz’s book, the production helps children explore words in multiple languages while celebrating unlikely friendships and the beauty of widening a loving circle of friends. Schwartz is known for her thoughtful, engaging children’s literature, including When Mom Feels Great, Then We Do Too, among many other titles that have inspired families and educators alike.

The show is directed by Becky Baird, an accomplished children’s theatre director and founder of Kids On Stage. With over 35 years of experience producing and directing youth theatre, Baird brings exceptional expertise to this joyful and heartfelt premiere. Under her direction, local professional actors bring Laggie, Grillo, and their world to life in a way that encourages empathy, curiosity, and creativity, the news release stated.

Families can enjoy one of two performances on Sunday, Jan. 4, 2026, at 12 p.m. or 2:30 p.m. at the David & Dorothea Garfield Theater at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center in La Jolla. In addition to public showings, this production is also available for bookings at schools, community centers, and other locations.
