Torrey Pines Rotary honors local veterans at La Jolla event
Many decades of service were represented as the Torrey Pines Rotary Club for the 20th year honored local veterans from all military branches at its annual Veterans Day-themed meeting Nov. 12 at the Sheraton La Jolla Hotel.
Many of the veterans in attendance recently participated in an “Honor Flight” during which vets who served in World War II, the Korean War and/or the Vietnam War, or who have a life-threatening illness, are flown to Baltimore for a dinner and a tour of the war memorials in and around Washington, D.C. The trip is at no cost to the participants.
Among those at the Nov. 12 Rotary meeting were 104-year-old veteran and Rotarian Max Gurney, 106-year-old World War II vet Bob Wilson, 103-year-old Roberta “Randy” Tidmore, who was a “Rosie the Riveter” during World War II, and 109-year-old WWII veteran Ervin Wendt.
Guests were treated to lunch, speakers, flowers and cupcakes arranged in the shape of the American flag.
