Two students arrested after BB gun found at Spring Valley middle school

by Teri Figueroa

Two Spring Valley middle school students were arrested Tuesday, accused of having a BB gun on campus, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies were called to STEAM Academy on Leland Street about 11:30 a.m., responding to a report that a student had a firearm on campus, Sgt. Matthew Moser said in a news release.

The school was placed on what is called “secure campus status,” which means students and staff are kept inside, and instruction can continue behind locked doors.

Deputies spoke with several students who may have been seen with a potential firearm, Moser said. A search turned up a BB gun in the backpack of one of the students, he said. It was not loaded.

Two students were arrested on suspicion of possession of a weapon on school grounds. Moser said deputies suspect one of the students brought the item to school and handed it off to the other.

“At this time, there is no outstanding threat to the school or community,” Moser said in the news release.
