Veterans Day ceremony at Miramar National Cemetery canceled due to government shutdown
The annual Veterans Day ceremony at Miramar National Cemetery has been canceled this year, officials announced Wednesday, marking the latest military event to be axed due to the ongoing government shutdown.
The canceled Miramar cemetery ceremonies include the celebration of the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II and the dedication of the newly renovated Memorial Amphitheater, officials said.
In years past, the event — which is annually operated by the Miramar National Cemetery Support Foundation, which supports memorial projects and events at the cemetery — has offered an opportunity for the public to meet with veterans and hear speeches about their combat experiences.
“We will look for a new date for the amphitheater dedication in 2026,” foundation president and CEO Charles Bailey said.
Miramar National Cemetery plans to remain open from sunrise to sunset on Veterans Day, and the public is allowed to visit the 10 memorials on the cemetery’s grounds.
Other local ceremonies that have been canceled due to the shutdown include all Fleet Week events at Broadway Pier from Nov. 5-9 and all plans to allow the public to tour warships at Naval Base San Diego.
