Wave forge 0-0 tie against Courage as NWSL’s second half begins
The San Diego Wave’s return from the National Women’s Soccer League’s month-long international break was an uneventful one.
Not that it’s necessarily bad. The visiting Wave played the North Carolina Courage to a 0-0 tie on Saturday night in Cary, N.C. The Wave are now 7-3-4 this season, while the Courage fell to 5-5-4.
“We had some good momentum and we created better goal-scoring opportunities than they (did) in the second half,” coach Jonas Eidevall said. “We’re not happy with not winning the game.’
Goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan earned her 27th career shutout for the Wave and her fourth shutout of the 2025 season.
But San Diego was unable to get much going offensively. Their best chance came in the 84th minute, when Makenzy Robbe ripped a shot off the crossbar. The Wave had numerous set-pieces and corner kicks, but were unable to capitalize.
A planned showdown against former Wave star Jaedyn Shaw never really materialized. Shaw entered the match with 20 minutes remaining and was unable to spark her team to the lead. Shaw was one of the Wave’s most accomplished and popular players before she requested a trade last offseason. The United States Women’s National Team regular last started a NWSL match on May 26.
The Wave will return to Snapdragon Stadium next week for its rivalry match against Angel City FC. The match starts at 7 p.m. and will be televised on ION.
Eidevall was asked how long it might take the Wave to return to form after the break.
“I don’t have an exact answer, but I know that the time we invest in, we get a return on,” Eidevall said. “We had a good training week, we grew into the game today. It was a difficult place to come and play. We’ll take that with us and go into the next training week with that in the backpack.”
Notable
The Wave extended their road unbeaten streak to five games, a franchise record.
• The Wave outshot the Courage, 18-6.
