Wave part ways with veteran midfielder, re-sign San Diego native for 2026
The San Diego Wave parted ways with a midfielder and re-signed a defender on Friday, reshaping their roster with training camp just weeks away.
Nya Harrison signed a new one-year contract with the club, hours after the Wave announced it had sold Savannah McCaskill to NJ/NY Gotham FC in exchange for $175,000.
McCaskill spent two seasons in San Diego after signing with the club as a free agent. The 29-year-old played in 41 regular-season matches, starting 35 of them.
Wave general manager Camille Ashton said McCaskill “expressed interest in a new opportunity, and we agreed that this trade was the appropriate next step for the player and the club.”
Harrison agreed to a new one-year contract with the club. A San Diego native, Harrison starred at Del Norte High School and played collegiately at Stanford. She signed with the Wave out of college, and made one appearance with the club in 2025. Harrison was part of the Wave’s roster last month, when it won a championship at the inaugural North American World Sevens Tournament in Florida.
“Since joining the Wave and signing her first professional contract, Nya has shown growth in her game and continued to develop through her rookie season,” Ashton said. “We’re excited to keep working with her and look forward to her continued progression with the Wave.”
Harrison, 23, is the latest young standout to either sign or re-up with the Wave. San Diego announced Wednesday that it had re-signed forward Melanie Barcenas to a one-year deal. The club signed Florida State defender Mimi Van Zanten and Virginia defender Lia Godfrey to multi-year contracts.
San Diego also cut ties with longtime goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan, who, like McCaskill, is an MLS veteran.
