Weekend college recap: Toreros men win, will play for WCC soccer title

The ninth-ranked University of San Diego and Division II Point Loma Nazarene University men’s soccer teams advanced toward conference titles last week, while San Diego State’s women’s doubles duo of Jo-Yee Chan and Vessa Turley qualified for the Nov. 19 NCAA tennis championships.

Chan and Turley won the ITA Conference Masters Doubles Championship Saturday, defeating Furman’s Lillie Murphy and Elle Warren 6-2, 6-3.

Three other Aztecs, led by Jayna Clemens won a trio of titles at the SDSU Fall Classic Tournament. Clemens won a division in singles with a 6-2, 6-0 win over the University of San Diego’s Maria Shmakova, then teamed with Ninon Martinache to win the doubles title with a 6-2 win over Missouri’s Mary Brumfield and Andrea Artimedia.

Aztec Vesa Gjinaj won the other singles division with a 6-4, 6-2 win over North Carolina Central’s Mariana Zottoli.

Men’s soccer

USD (12-2-3) travels to Oregon State on Saturday for a match that will decide the West Coast Conference champion. The Toreros are 6-1-1 in WCC play after Iain Wagner scored in the 57th minute on a feed from Devin Zachry at Alcala Park to give USD a 1-0 victory over Gonzaga. Goalkeeper Lucca Adams turned in a fifth straight shutout.

PLNU (13-3-1) clinched a third straight PacWest Conference title with wins over Jessup (9-0) and Fresno Pacific (4-0) at home. Cole Friesen had three goals and three assists in the two games, while Simon Sagal, Emmett Layman and Oz Rocca each had scored two goals. The Sea Lions are the top seed going into Thursday’s opening round of the PacWest Tournament in Santa Barbara.

San Jose State defeated San Diego State (7-9-2) 4-0 in the first round of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament for the second straight year.

UC San Diego (2-9-7) had its season end with a 2-0, first-round loss to third-seeded Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo in the Big West Tournament.

Cal State San Marcos (6-7-5) defeated Cal State San Bernardino on penalty kicks in the first round of the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament.

Defending state champion and fourth-ranked Cuyamaca College (17-1-2, 11-1-1) travels to third-place Palomar College (11-6-3, 9-3-1) Tuesday night for their final Pacific Coast Athletic Conference match. Second-place MiraCosta (11-3-6, 10-2-1) is at San Diego City College at 3 p.m.

Women’s soccer

PLNU (8-3-5) will host the PacWest Tournament this week, facing Hawaii Hilo in Thursday’s semifinals at 2 p.m. The finals will be played at noon Saturday on the PLNU campus. The Sea Lions defeated Fresno Pacific 3-0 behind Julia Pinnell’s shutout in the regular season finale after tying Jessup 1-1.

• San Diego State (9-4-7) lost at top-seeded Boise State on penalty kicks in the Mountain West Tournament to end its season. The game was tied 1-1 at the end of regulation.

• USD (4-7-7) had its season conclude on a pair of 3-1 losses to Santa Clara and Seattle. The seasons also ended for UCSD (5-6-8) and Cal State San Marcos (7-5-5).

Women’s volleyball

USD (19-4, 12-0 in WCC play) stretched its winning streak to 12 straight matches with a 3-2 win over Saint Mary’s on Saturday at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. Isabel Clark and Nemo Beach, respectively, had 16 and 15 kills. Kali Engeman had 12 kills and seven blocks. BayLea Sparks had 10 blocks.

• PLNU (21-2) scored 3-1 road wins at Biola and Concordia to improve to 9-0 in PacWest play entering this week’s final three regular-season matches at home. Saren Rogers had 43 kills in last week’s two wins, while Macy Reynolds had 47 digs and Sophia Baugh 99 assists.

• Mesa College (25-21, 14-0 in PCAC play) stretched its winning streak to 22 straight matches to maintain its No. 2 ranking in the state. Miramar College (21-6, 12-2) is second in the PCAC going into the final week of the regular season.

• San Diego State (13-12, 8-6) split a pair of Mountain West road matches last week, winning 3-2 at Grand Canyon before losing 3-1 at New Mexico. Taylor Underwood had 35 kills over the two matches.

Junior college football

Caleb Blocker rushed for 109 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries and caught three passes for 57 yards Saturday as Southwestern College (7-3) snapped a three-game losing streak with a 27-21 home win over Chaffey.

• Darick Dubose Jr. (El Cajon High School) rushed for 167 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries and gained 30 yards on a reception as Grossmont (6-4) scored a 37-17 home win over Glendale.

• Palomar (3-7) defeated Mt. San Jacinto 35-28. Quarterback Jakob Harris (Oceanside High) completed 17 of 34 passes for 289 yards and three touchdowns. Chris Bausch (Fallbrook High) rushed for 101 yards and a touchdown on 28 carries.

• Mesa (4-6) suffered a 65-27 loss at Riverside.

Cross country

Cuyamaca College placed third in the team scoring and San Diego was fifth last Friday in the California Community College Southern Regional Championships at Liberty Station. Mesa’s Luciano Roberts finished third among the individual runners. Cuyamaca’s Ivan Guzman (Liberty Charter High) was 10th, with Jose Ramirez (Rancho Bernardo High) of Mesa 12th and Daniel Vestemean of Cuyamaca 13th.

• Mesa’s Jazzlyn Islas was second among the individuals in the women’s division and teammate Natalie Allen (Valley Center High) finished fifth as the Olympians placed second in the team standings. Cuyamaca College’s Marseel Bahnan finished 15th.

• PLNU’s Madeline Reeves finished fourth overall in the women’s NCAA Division II West Regional Championships. PLNU finished sixth in the team standings. Angela McManus of Cal State San Marcos was 13th in the women’s division and the Cougars also placed 13th in the team standings.

• In the men’s division, Alan Jimenez of CSUSM was ninth and the Cougars finished sixth in the team scoring. CSUSM’s Sankalp Shastri finished 19th.
