Weekend college report: USD continues to win in men’s soccer, women’s volleyball; JC football update
The nationally ranked University of San Diego men’s soccer and women’s volleyball teams continued their midseason winning streaks last week, while Point Loma Nazarene sent three of its teams to Hawaii last week and returned with a 4-1-1 record.
The 12th-ranked USD soccer team defeated Seattle 3-0 at home and scored a 1-0 win at Saint Mary’s on a late own goal to run its record to 10-2-3 overall and 4-1-1 in West Coast Conference play. Goalkeeper Lucca Adams made a total of seven saves in back-to-back shutouts.
Nemo Beach had 18 kills and 15 digs, Kylie Munday had 55 assists and Kali Engeman had 15 kills and six blocks as the Toreros’ women’s volleyball team, which is ranked 38th in the nation by NCAA analytics, defeated visiting Washington State for a ninth straight win. The Toreros are now 16-4 overall and 9-0 in West Coast Conference play.
PLNU women’s volleyball team, which is No. 5 in the national NCAA Division II rankings, swept its two matches in Hawaii. PLNU (18-2, 7-0) defeated Hawaii Pacific 3-1 and Chaminade 3-2 to run its winning streak to five straight matches. Abigail Nua had 45 kills over the sweep, while Sophia Baugh had 95 assists and 28 digs, and Macy Reynolds had 41 digs.
More men’s soccer
San Diego State (6-7-2, 2-1-2) earned a 2-2 tie at San Jose State on a Terrence Okoeguale goal with 70 seconds to play.
• Defending state champion Cuyamaca College (13-1-2), MiraCosta College (8-2-6) and Palomar College (9-4-3) are tied for first in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference at 7-1-1. All three teams went 2-0 last week. MiraCosta hosts Palomar on Tuesday and Cuyamaca on Friday.
• Point Loma Nazarene’s 10th-ranked squad (9-3-1, 5-1) split its two matches, losing 2-0 to Hawaii-Hilo after defeating Pacific 3-1.
Women’s soccer
San Diego State (7-4-6, 3-2-4) defeated Wyoming 1-0 at home after tying Colorado State 2-2 on the road last week. Alexis Leath (West Hills High School) scored both goals against the Rams. Mia Hambro Svendsen scored against Wyoming as goalkeeper Kailey Carlen (Chula Vista High School) turned in her sixth shutout.
• USD (4-4-7, 1-4-3) lost at home to Saint Mary’s 2-1 after tying Loyola Marymount. Josefine Schlichting had a goal and an assist against the Lions.
• UCSD (4-6-8, 2-3-4) played Long Beach State to a scoreless tie and forged a 1-1 tie with UC Irvine. Charlotte Wilfert had eight total saves.
• PLNU (6-2-4, 3-0-3) defeated Hawaii Pacific 3-0 and tied Hawaii-Hilo 1-1. Kylie Garcia and Priya Torres each had a goal and an assist on the trip, while goalkeeper Julia Pinnell gave up one goal in 180 minutes.
• Cal State San Marcos (6-4-4, 3-3-2) split its two matches, beating 16th-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills 1-0 on a goal by Brittany Brown and suffering a 1-0 loss at Cal State San Bernardino.
• Southwestern College has won seven straight matches and, at 11-1-3 overall and 9-1-1 in league play, leads the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference. MiraCosta College (9-4-3, 8-1-2) is second while Palomar College (8-2-5, 6-1-4) defeated Miramar College (9-4-4, 7-2-3) last week to tighten the battle for third.
Women’s volleyball
Freshman Kendall Mairs had 19 digs and 26 assists as San Diego State (12-9, 7-3) scored a 3-1 win at Boise State after losing to Utah State in five games. Taylor Underwood had 18 kills in the win while Annelise Rising had 16.
• Mia Lundberg and Bella Town (Carlsbad High School) paced Mesa College (22-1, 11-0) to its 19th straight win. Grossmont College (9-1, 10-8) is second in the PCAC, while Miramar College (8-2, 17-6) is third.
JC football
Quarterback Reggie Johnson (Madison High School) completed 15 of 27 passes for 205 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 58 yards on 12 carries as San Diego Mesa College (2-3, 3-5) defeated Chaffey 31-21.
• Southwestern College (3-2, 6-2) lost 38-35 to El Camino College to slip to 30th in the JC Gridiron national rankings. The Jaguars are 1-2 without starting quarterback Brayten Silbor.
Cross country
Alan Jimenez (Holtville High School) finished fourth and Renton McGregor was ninth as Cal State San Marcos finished third in the men’s division of the CCAA cross country finals in Chico. Angela McManus finished 21st overall as Cal State San Marcos finished fourth in the women’s division.
• Led by individual winner Jazzlyn Islas (19 minutes, 8 seconds), Mesa College scored a perfect 15 points to win the PCAC women’s cross country title. Natalie Allen (Valley Center High School) was second with a time of 19:29 over the 3.1-mile course, while Kayden Coker (Clairemont High School) was third at 21:25.
• Ivan Guzman (Liberty Charter High School) ran a meet-best time of 21:24 over 4 miles to lead Cuyamaca College to a second-place finish over defending state champion Mesa in the men’s division. Jordan Myers of Mesa was third in 21:45 with Daniel Vestemean (21:51) of Cuyamaca fifth and Luciano Roberts (22:05) of Mesa sixth.
Women’s golf
San Diego State’s Ema Narita tied for sixth at 4-under 212 in the Rainbow Wahine Invitational in Hawaii. The Aztecs finished eighth among 19 teams.
