With Prop. 50 scheduled, city should also have honest vote on trash fee
The city is facing lawsuits for imposing a new trash fee on more than 200,000 residential customers. The information the city provided to win passage of a ballot measure in 2022 allowing this fee was incompetently inaccurate. The cost is far higher than what voters were told, which enabled the measure to squeak by.
Gov. Gavin Newsom’s Proposition 50 this November means we already will have a citywide election, so the cost to add another question is much less than a standalone proposition would have been.
The San Diego City Council should do the right thing and put the question about this fee before the voters again, this time with the actual costs presented.
I challenge the City Council to make up for past mistakes and let the voters make an informed decision. That would be the honest, fair and honorable thing to do.
What say you, City Council?
