Alumni Report: 77 San Diegans will take part in bowl games; here’s who they are.
The college football bowl season is in full swing, with no less than 77 players with San Diego ties on bowl team rosters.
Here’s where the locals are playing:
• Tyler Robles (La Costa Canyon) is the kicker at Texas State, which plays Rice on Jan. 2 in the Armed Forces Bowl. He has connected on 19 of 21 field goals and 48 of 49 PATs this season.
• Receiver Josh Meredith (Mater Dei Catholic), defensive end Jack Janikowski (Cathedral Catholic) and punter/kicker Ryan Harris (Mesa College) are key contributors at Washington State, which plays Utah State in Monday’s Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. Meredith has 49 catches for 639 yards and three touchdowns. Janikowski has 10 tackles and a sack. Harris is averaging 40.9 yards per punt. Kahanu Davis (Southwestern College), Ty Olsen (Lincoln), John Shepard (San Diego Mesa) and Corey Thompson Jr. (Lincoln) are on Utah State’s roster.
• Tight end Zack Marshall (Carlsbad) has a career-high 15 catches for 195 yards and a TD for Michigan, which plays Texas in the Dec. 31 Citrus Bowl.
• Linebacker Martell Hughes (Madison) has 30 tackles and two interceptions for Arizona State, which plays Duke in the Dec. 31 Sun Bowl. Offensive lineman Kai Jacobowitz (Carlsbad) is redshirting for Duke.
• Tight end Matt Lauter (Torrey Pines) had five catches for 37 yards and a TD in Boise State’s LA Bowl loss to Washington. Linebacker Marco Notarainni (Torrey Pines) had 77 tackles for the season. Edge rusher Jayden Virgin-Morgan (Mt. Carmel) had 56 tackles and six sacks. Punter Trevor Allen (Classical Academy) redshirted for Washington.
• Roderick Robinson II (Lincoln) played in nine games for Georgia, which plays in the Jan. 1 Sugar Bowl.
• Keionte Scott (Helix) has 44 tackles, three sacks and an interception for Miami, which plays Texas A&M on Saturday in the College Football Playoff. Marcus Ratcliffe (Cathedral Catholic) has 60 tackles for Texas A&M.
• Gracen Halton (St. Augustine) has 31 tackles and 3 1/2 sacks for Oklahoma, which plays Alabama on Friday in the College Football Playoff. Reid Schuback (Poway) has kicked off in two games for Alabama.
• Isaiah World (Lincoln) has started all 12 games at left tackle for Oregon, which plays James Madison on Saturday in the College Football Playoff. Quarterback Akili Smith Jr. (Lincoln) and defensive back Xavier Barksdale (Steele Canyon) are redshirting for the Ducks.
• Linebacker Luke Ferrelli (Carlsbad) has 87 tackles for Cal, which plays Hawaii in the Dec. 24 Hawaii Bowl. Offensive lineman Sam Bjerke (Cathedral Catholic) is redshirting.
• Offensive lineman Luis Martinez (Vista) has played all 12 games at right tackle for Central Michigan, which plays Northwestern in the Dec. 26 GameAbove Sports Bowl.
• Premiere Whitley (Helix) finished with nine tackles for Prairie View A&M, which lost 40-38 to South Carolina State in the Celebration Bowl. Receiver Dazure Paggett (Lincoln) and defensive back Malachi Williams (Cathedral Catholic) are redshirting at Prairie View.
• Defensive lineman Mackavelli Malotumau (El Camino) has 30 tackles and 1 1/2 sacks for Western Kentucky, which plays Southern Mississippi in the Dec. 23 New Orleans Bowl. Kyle McCormick (La Costa Canyon) is the holder for Southern Miss.
• James Wagenseller (Poway) is averaging 43.1 yards per punt for Army, which plays UConn in the Dec. 27 Fenway Bowl. Chris Williams (Francis Parker) has played in 11 games at defensive back, and offensive lineman Jonah Zimmerman (Oceanside) is also on the Army roster.
• Isaiah Jatta (Helix) is the starter at left tackle for BYU, which plays Georgia Tech in the Dec. 27 Pop-Tarts Bowl.
• Kamron Beachem (Oceanside) has seven catches for 133 yards for Fresno State, which plays Miami (Ohio) in the Dec. 27 Arizona Bowl.
• Defensive lineman Jaxson Moi (Cathedral Catholic) has 11 tackles and a sack for Tennessee, which plays Illinois in the Dec. 30 Music City Bowl.
• Offensive lineman Misael Sandoval (St. Augustine) has played in four games for Vanderbilt, which plays Iowa in the Dec. 31 ReliaQuest Bowl
• Defensive end Jared Martin (Central Union) is redshirting at TCU. Nick De Fina (Torrey Pines) is a redshirt linebacker at USC, which plays TCU in the Dec. 30 Alamo Bowl.
• Don Saunders (Cathedral Catholic) played in six games for Utah, making four tackles, while teammate Moroni Anae (Cathedral Catholic) has played in nine games with three tackles. Kicker Joey Cheek (Cathedral Catholic) has played in a pair of games, while kicker Robert Petrich (Granite Hills) is redshirting. Utah plays Nebraska in the Dec. 31 Las Vegas Bowl.
• Xavier Van (Helix) is a redshirt at New Mexico, which plays Minnesota in the Dec. 26 Rate Bowl.
• Quarterback Emmett Brown (San Marcos) is redshirting for Coastal Carolina, which plays Louisiana Tech in the Dec. 30 Independence Bowl.
• Receiver Trevor Ladd (La Costa Canyon) is redshirting at Virginia, while punter John Butcher (Grossmont) is redshirting at Missouri. The teams play each other in the Dec. 27 Gator Bowl.
• Receiver Rex Haynes (Cathedral Catholic) has played in two games for Arizona, while Tyler Prasuhn (Carlsbad) has kicked in one game. Running back Will Fierro (Bishop’s) is redshirting at SMU. Arizona and SMU play in the Jan. 2 Holiday Bowl.
• Linebacker Jaden Mangini (La Jolla Country Day) plays for Navy, which faces Cincinnati in the Jan. 2 Liberty Bowl.
• Eli Gilmour (Del Norte) has played in two games as the long snapper for Wake Forest, which plays Mississippi State in the Jan. 2 Duke’s Mayo Bowl.

Sayin’s playin
Quarterback Julian Sayin (Carlsbad) leads Ohio State into the Dec. 31 Cotton Bowl against the winner of the Miami-Texas A&M College Football Playoff game.
Sayin completed 279 of 356 passes for 3,323 yards and 31 touchdowns as a sophomore. He finished fourth in Heisman Trophy voting.

San Diego State’s locals
Local players have played a major role for San Diego State, which faces North Texas in the Dec. 27 New Mexico Bowl.
Running backs Lucky Sutton (Cathedral Catholic), Christian Washington (Helix) and Byron Cardwell Jr. (Morse) lead the way. Sutton has 239 carries for 1,237 yards and 10 TDs. Washington has 88 carries for 486 and three scores. Cardwell has 47 carries for 261 yards and a TD.
Nathan Acevedo (Lincoln) has 12 catches for 129 yards, Will Cianfrini (Carlsbad) has a pair of catches for 10 yards and Jerry McClure (Mater Dei Catholic) has one catch.
Linebacker Tano Letuli (Cathedral Catholic) made 30 tackles in six games before going down with an injury. Edge rusher Trey White (Eastlake) has 49 tackles and seven sacks, and Josiah Cox (Lincoln) has 19 tackles. Defensive back Isaiah Buxton (Mater Dei Catholic) has played in eight games. Tyson Chavez (Mission Hills) was the long snapper in 11 games.
Also on the roster are defensive linemen Marlon Ames (El Capitan) and Sidney Dupuy, defensive back Braylon Cardwell (Mount Miguel), linebacker Jayden Kendricks (Eastlake), receiver De’yhare Overstreet-Glover (Mater Dei Catholic) and punter Eemil Herranen (Del Norte).
