Democrats also sought to control online content in ‘official manner’

Re “”Right embraces cancel culture after reviling it” (Sept. 20): I agree with the points made by Matt Lewis. They’re partly why I don’t vote Republican. But he states their efforts are worse in a “more overt, efficient and official manner.”

What Lewis leaves out, either out of ignorance or deliberately to deceive, is that both the Obama and Biden administrations sought to classify internet providers as common carriers under Title II of the Communications Act of 1934. This was to give the FCC (then controlled by Democrats) political control over the internet and speech. This is just as “overt, efficient and official” as Republicans’ efforts. Apparently, he also forgot that AB 587 was enacted in California to oversee online platform content. That was ruled unconstitutional, running afoul of the First Amendment.

After considering the Democrats’ own history in this space, it’s clear those principles Lewis claims Democrats have are no different than Republicans’. That’s why I don’t vote Democrat.
