Fire rules will hammer homeowners with fixed incomes

Re “Council fast-tracked rules on fire safety for housing” (Dec. 22): It described how the state is mandating homeowners “harden” their homes in certain areas of the city. For example, “Zone Zero” may not have anything flammable within 5 feet of a home. Zone 1 must have at least 5 feet of clearance between homes and vegetation. Zone 2 must have 35 to 100 feet of clearance.

I have concerns regarding how homeowners, who have fixed incomes and are unable to afford to move, will comply with the law. Is the state going to offer low-interest loans to allow homeowners to comply?

Additionally, what steps is the city making to comply with mandates? Is it going to reduce fire risks in the canyons? If residents are required to limit fire risks, isn’t the city also required to do the same?
