La Jolla crime and public safety news: Lifeguard stats, blotter for Oct. 24 to Nov. 15
Lifeguards share stats for La Jolla Shores
Almost 3 million people have visited La Jolla Shores thus far in 2025, making for a busy year for local lifeguards.
At the Nov. 12 La Jolla Shores Association meeting, lifeguard Lt. John Maher said guards had taken 47,000 preventive actions; made 803 rescues, most of them related to injuries or potential drowning; 290 medical aids, 71 of them considered “serious”; 75 calls about missing people, mostly children and senior citizens; and 170 calls for other service.

“We had [extra] seasonal staffing at the [La Jolla Shores tower] until Nov. 1, but from November through March there are four guards at La Jolla Shores tower and one supervisor,” Maher said.
Seasonal satellite towers are moved so they won’t be washed away by winter waves.
