Montessori Education Creates Children As Changemakers
In Country Montessori School’s mission statement, we are clear about values that are important to us. Our statement tells you that “we aim to foster independent, confident, academically prepared, and socially responsible citizens who are lifelong learners and problem solvers.”
We include fostering “socially responsible citizens” not just because that is one of the principles that led Dr. Maria Montessori as she created her child-centered educational method, but also because our community believes in the importance of ethics, accountability, and service.
Our staff is great at finding creative and impactful ways for our students to engage with the community, both locally and on a global scale. One example is the Feeding San Diego peanut and other nut butter drive from September 22- October 3. This gives our students the chance to share a favorite snack with local kids who are facing food insecurity. As kids know, nut butters are not only delicious but provide a great source of ready nutrition.
(And because exploration is such a big part of each day at CMS, check out the peanut butter tasting on our Instagram account to see the winning spread!)
Also this month, our upper elementary students began their regular visits to Poway Gardens, alocal memory care facility near our school. At this age, we begin to bring students more into thewider world to broaden their experience with resources beyond the classroom.
When students spend time with the residents in memory care, not only do they become part of the therapeutic environment for those with memory loss, but they build respect for the lives and wisdom of older people.

Strengthening intergenerational ties are just one of the great results of another school serviceactivity as families hit the beach for their first beach clean-up of the school year. This is a greatway to get out and enjoy one of the top advantages of living in San Diego county whiledemonstrating to students that everyone has a responsibility to keep their community beautiful.
Maria Montessori knew that childhood offers a unique opportunity to nurture a new generationthat is ready to take on the challenges of their time with curiosity, compassion, and conviction.
“It will be necessary to look to children for help if the world is to be made better,” she said. AtCountry Montessori School, we put this into practice every day.
