Nick Canepa’s report card: How the Chargers fared in Friday’s season-opening win over Kansas City

by Nick Canepa

Nick Canepa grades the Chargers following Friday’s 27-21 win over the Chiefs:

Quarterbacks:  A+

Justin Herbert started off running himself right away, and then hit Quintin Johnson with a 33-yard catch and run, leading to a Johnson touchdown on the first series. Had a terrific run nullified. Herbert never has played much better than he did in Sao Paulo. He was Antonio Carlos Jobim.

Running backs: B

Hot rookie Omarion Hampton gained six yards on his first carry, but early on the offense went airborne. But Hampton is a big, fast back with (as Bobby Ross would say) some evade to him. He mistakenly ran out of bounds at the half. Rookie mistake, but a big one. Najee Harris ran hard and well.

Receivers: A

The big thing was that Johnson, a borderline bust, got off to a quick start — and a big finishing touchdown. Tight end Tyler Conkin had a long catch and run and another soon after. Keenan Allen came back big time: the ultimate possession receiver got wide open for the touchdown that put his side up by eight. Ladd McConkey, with those great feet, continues to be a force.

Offensive line: B

With ace left tackle Rashawn Slater out for the year, class didn’t need to hear guard Mekhi “Big Ticket” Becton, their biggest free agent get, was added to the injury list with an illness. But Becton started and had rest periods and didn’t play sick. Jamaree Salyer had a big early hold. Nobody in Brazil blocked on the lone Herbert sack.

Defensive line: A

The middle was stout. The Chiefs had a tremendous amount of trouble using their legs to move the ball. Teair Tart had an incredibly stupid slapping penalty that led to a TD. But he later knocked down a pass. Da’Shawn Hand had a late sack.

Linebackers: A

Khalil Mack made a big tackle right away. Tuli Tuipulotu’s rush forced Patrick Mahomes to misfire on a long one. Daiyan Henley had a sack near the goal line to halt a drive. Bud Dupree had a nice batdown. Troy Dye got beat very badly on a long touchdown pass to Travis Kelce that probably won’t happen again in his career.

Secondary: B-

Donte Jackson has a great tackle, as did Tariq Still. Alohi Gilman had a missed tackle he regretted. As usual, Derwin James’ presence was felt. Everybody blew it on the late pass completion that never should have happened in a real football game.

Special team: A

Cameron Dicker The Kicker, still perfect on FGs under 40, made his first two. Gilman made a brilliant kickoff tackle

Coaching: A

Jim Harbaugh should have let the clock run down on the first half’s final series. It gave the Chiefs a three-point try. YOU DON’T GIVE MAHOMES TIME. But Harbaugh’s game plan was aces. Never lost an opener.

Next opportunity — vs. Raiders: A

This game will be played Monday night at 7 in Las Vegas. But the thing is, the Raiders aren’t as good
