Padres minors: Miguel Mendez stellar in Missions debut, Luis Campusano homers

by Jeff Sanders

Miguel Mendez did not win his Double-A debut.

He was still pretty, pretty good.

The 23-year-old right-hander struck out 11 over six strong innings in the San Antonio Missions’ 6-2 loss to visiting Springfield on Thursday.

Mendez allowed two unearned runs on one hit and four walks.

He opened the season with a 3.97 ERA in three starts at low Single-A Lake Elsinore (11⅓ IP) and went 7-3 with a 1.32 ERA in 12 starts (61⅓ IP) at high Single-A Fort Wayne.

A productive season, combined with several deadline trades, has Mendez ranked No. 4 among Padres prospects by MLB.com.

Second baseman Anthony Vilar (.646 OPS) went 2-for-4 with a double and shortstop Francisco Acuña (.706 OPS) had San Antonio’s other extra-base hit, also a double.

San Antonio is 55-50.
