Storytellers celebrate return to live audience performance

by Scott Hopkins

Members of the Storytellers of San Diego love telling their intriguing, mysterious, spellbinding tales, but they would much rather tell them to a live audience. And, for the first time in several years, they are looking forward to a full house as “Tellabration” returns live to Ocean Beach.

On Nov. 12, a group of San Diego’s finest storytellers will enthrall audience members at Bethany Lutheran Church, 2051 Sunset Cliffs Blvd. in a 7:30 p.m. show. This year’s theme, which always pays homage to the Ocean Beach lifestyle, is “Tradewinds, Tides and Tales” honoring the salt air.

Stories will include folkloric, literary, and personal genres with many different styles represented including some with musical accompaniment. None of the storytellers will use note cards.

Scheduled to appear at this year’s event are new voices Arlyn Hackett, Catherine Bonin, and Carol Jaksa. Returning are The Patchwork players (Patti Christensen and James Nelson-Lucas), Jim Dieckmann, Fred Laskowski, Marilyn McPhie, and David Schmidt.

“Tellabration” is the brainchild of D.J. (Paw Paw) Pinkerton, who in 1988 hatched the idea of one night each year for storytellers in every community of the world to join together and share tales to family, friends, and others.

The performance is best suited for ages 12 and above. Tickets are $20 at the door and can be purchased earlier at eventbrite.com. Free parking is available at both the church and the diocese across the alley.
