A 34-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of violating a workplace violence restraining order stemming from an incident at San Diego State University’s Hillel Jewish Center, according to San Diego police.

The man was also arrested on a battery charge involving a separate case, police said.

Details of the battery case, as well as what prompted the restraining order at Hillel, were not available Tuesday.

Police said the man was seen on a security camera on the grounds of the Hillel Center about 7:50 a.m. Monday, “despite having a served restraining order ordering him to stay away from the property and to not contact the employees of the facility.” He was seen placing a bag at the door of the center and securing it with a string, police said.

The man was detained, and bomb experts determined that the bag did not contain an explosive or arson device. The contents were not disclosed.

He was booked into San Diego Central Jail.

In a statement, the university identified the man as an SDSU student, adding that, “We recognize that incidents of this nature can be particularly distressing for members of our Jewish community and others who may feel impacted, and members of the administration have been directly in contact with Hillel and members of the SDSU Jewish community to provide information and to offer support.”
