Target will now recycle your old clothes — and bring you new ones the next day
Some used clothes can be donated or resold. But if an item is misshapen, stained or torn, it could end up in a landfill.
Target is aiming to stop that trajectory with a new do-good program. Its Clothing Take Back Program is being rolled out at stores across California, including at least seven in San Diego County.
“The clothing will be reused, recycled or responsibly disposed of, with the goal of diverting clothing from landfills,” the store’s website says.
To recycling clothing, people can drop off clothes in a collection bin at the front of stores, close to the bag and bottle recycling bins.
What can be dropped off? Any kind of clothing, in any condition, from any brand. But there are two rules: the clothes must be clean and they must be dry.
Can any apparel item be donated for recycling? No. It does not recycle old bags, purses, shoes and other footwear, swimwear and rain or snow gear.
The San Diego County Target stores that now offer clothing recycling include:
- 3029 University Ave. in San Diego
- 4864 Newport Ave. in San Diego
- 3030 Grape St. in San Diego
- 280 E. Via Rancho Pkwy in Escondido
- 443 College Blvd. in Oceanside
- 935 Sweetwater Road, Suite 101, in Spring Valley
- 1751 University Drive in Vista
The retailer is also making it easier to get new clothing — and everything else Target sells.
Target has expanded next-day delivery to San Diego, with hundreds of thousands of eligible items — 85% of what Target stores sell — eligible for this service.
To get next-day delivery, you must place an order before 3 p.m. The service is free for orders of more than $35, with one exception: there is no next-day delivery order minimum for members of the Target Circle 360 loyalty club or for Target Circle cardholders.
Coming soon to Encinitas
Nordstrom Rack will open a 24,000-square-foot store in Encinitas this spring.
It will be in the El Camino Promenade, which has a mix of discount and bargain retailers, including TJ Maxx, Five Below and Dollar Tree.
“This new location expands the company’s physical footprint and economic impact in California. It currently operates 26 Nordstrom stores and 68 Nordstrom Rack stores in California, generating more than 12,800 jobs statewide,” the company said in a news release.
Nordstrom Rack, the discount arm of the brand, which was founded in Seattle in 1901, is the largest source of new customers to Nordstrom, the release added.
