Two new books for aspiring writers draw on the wisdom of famed authors

Tree lighting and holiday market: The Otay Ranch Town Center is hosting its 19th annual tree lighting ceremony and holiday farmers market on Tuesday. This year’s 50-foot Christmas tree has more than 17,000 lights and will be turned on at 7 p.m. There will also a snowglobe photo station, artificial snow falling from the sky, live musical and dance performances and free holiday cookies and hot chocolate, while supplies last. Free days at art museum: The San Diego Museum of Art in Balboa Park offers free general admission on the third Tuesday of the month for San Diego County residents and the second Thursday of the month for all visitors. Both free days are subject to restrictions, such as being limited to general admission and excluding special exhibitions. The next free day is Nov. 18. “(No) Exit to Mars”: Loud Fridge Theatre Group will present readings of this play by Nick Scutti in two locations. Lightscape: One of the most colorful light shows during the holidays is Lightscape at the San Diego Botanic Garden. This mile-long illuminated trail showcases artists’ installations from around the world. Each section of the Botanic Garden’s trail comes alive with a multitude of colorful lights and music, where trees and bushes are decorated. Lightscape will also have seasonal foods and cocktails for purchase. Through Jan. 4. Ticket prices are $18 for children and $28 for adults.  “Eisenhower: This Piece of Ground”: North Coast Repertory Theatre presents this solo play by Richard Hellesen starring Tony-winner John Rubinstein. Ice Rink opens for season: Ice skaters rejoice, the Rady Children’s Ice Rink is returing to Liberty Station’s Central Promenade. The family-friendly activity runs for about six weeks and raises money for Rady’s Thriving After Cancer program at the Peckham Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders. Last year, more than 30,000 people visited Rady’s Ice Rink, and event organizers say an estimated $2 million has been generated since the event started. Opening day hours are 3 to 10 p.m. Thursday. Drone show: For fans of drones and light shows, the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center is hosting a two-night drone art show. The choreographed aerial show is produced by Fever and features 65 minutes of more than 500 illuminated drones creating 3D images in the sky. The drones are programmed to move with music from Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons” violin concerto and Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake” ballet score. ‘¡Cómo el Grinch robó la Navidad!’ The Old Globe will present a concert presentation of this world premiere Spanish-language translation of its annual production of “Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas” musical. Fleet opens sea otter IMAX film: The world premiere of the “Sea Otters: A Wild Family Adventure” is taking place today at the Fleet Science Center. The film gives viewers a look into the world of sea otters living on Vancouver Island and features Finn, a sea otter pup, as he grows up in this “coming-of-age” story, according to the directors Annabel Robinson, Paul Phelan and Sarah Beard.
