Two Players of the Year among 30 All-CIF honorees from La Jolla high schools

La Jolla is well-represented in All-CIF high school sports teams announced recently in the San Diego Section, including two Players of the Year as well as a Coach of the Year.

Here are the locals selected:

Boys water polo

Player of the Year

Dexter Black, La Jolla High

The 6-foot-6 Black led La Jolla to a 23-4 record and the San Diego Section Open Division championship. In the title game, a 13-12 win over Cathedral Catholic, he scored four goals, including a penalty shot with 28 seconds remaining that provided the difference.

Coach of the Year

Tom Atwell, La Jolla High

Longtime La Jolla coach Atwell guided the Vikings to their first CIF San Diego Section Open Division boys water polo championship this past season, and they advanced to the Southern California Regional Division I semifinals.

Conway also was named a third-team All-American after scoring 54 goals with 25 assists for 133 points as Bishop’s won the San Diego Section Division I championship. In two seasons, Conway has 94 goals and 47 assists.
