Weekend college recap: Kylie Ray leads USD past UC Riverside; PLNU men swept
Sophomore guard Kylie Ray scored a team-leading 18 points with nine rebounds Sunday to lead University of San Diego’s women’s basketball team to a 63-56 victory over UC Riverside at Jenny Craig Pavilion.
Senior guard Hallie Rhodes had nine points, five assists and four rebounds. Freshman post Ayla Williams had nine points and four rebounds. Freshman guard Olivia Owens had eight points and nine rebounds and sophomore forward Eva Ruse had seven points and six rebounds.
USD improved to 5-7 with a second straight win at home.
More women’s basketball
Guard Nat Martinez was named the Mountain West player of the week for scoring 22 points San Diego State’s 64-53 victory at Kansas State last Wednesday. The Aztecs are 6-3.
• Guard Izzy Navarro (Cathedral Catholic High School) had 33 points, 14 assist, 10 rebounds and seven steals over two games as Point Loma Nazarene (8-2) scored a pair of wins to improve to 4-0 in PacWest Conference play. Navarro was named the PacWest player of the week. Guard Hannah Golan had 20 points and 18 rebounds over the two games. Center Eiley Tippins had 23 points and 12 rebounds as PLNU extended its winning streak to eight straight.
• Cal State San Marcos (4-2) split its first two California Collegiate Athletic Association games. Forward Kaity Haan led the Cougars with 30 points and 16 rebounds over the two games. Guard Tatum Tamashiro had 23 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Forward Sydney Hani had 16 points and 17 rebounds.
• Guard Kyla Palpallatoc (Morse High) scored 16 points and forward Kiya Waters added 14 as MiraCosta ran its record to 12-0 with a 70-46 romp at Glendale.
• Mesa College (7-5) lost 78-49 to Mount San Antonio College in the championship game of the Los Angeles Valley College Tournament. Guard Stevie Lundquist scored 59 points in the three tournament games. Guard Maleah Porch (Otay Ranch High) had 40.
Men’s basketball
Defending PacWest champion Point Loma Nazarene (8-2, 3-1) suffered a rare, 92-73 loss to Dominican at home after defeating Biola 74-70 on the road. Sophomore forward Andrew Nagy had 32 points and 17 rebounds for the Sea Lions in the two games, while junior guard Tyce Paulsen had 30 points.
• CSUSM (3-4, 0-2) suffered a pair of losses to Cal State Monterey Bay in an unusual back-to-back, home-and-away series by scores of 92-82 at home and 82-75 in Seaside. Senior San Diego City College transfers Keavie Love (34 points, seven rebounds and eight assists) and Dexter Stratton (31 points, 14 rebounds) paced the Cougars.
• Defending champion San Diego City College (7-4) opens Pacific Coast Athletic Conference play Wednesday night at home against Grossmont College (1-9).
• Palomar College also has a 7-4 non-conference record going into its PCAC opener Wednesday against Southwestern.
PLNU honors
PLNU has had two fall-sport athletes named first-team NCAA Division II All-Americans.
Senior midfielder Cole Friesen (Eastlake High) was named to the men’s soccer All-American first team. Junior forward Emmett Layman was a second-team pick.
Senior outside hitter Abigail Nua, who led PLNU to the NCAA Division II national semifinals for the first time in program history after returning from a near season-ending injury, has been named the Division II national player of the year in women’s volleyball.
The NCAA Division II commissioners also named Nua a first-team All-American. Junior setter Sophia Baugh was a third-team pick. Nua was also a first-team All-American pick by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Baugh was a second-team selection and senior libero Macy Reynolds was a third-team pick.
Wrestling
Led by Sebastian Anderson, Sergio Porras and Ivan Natcelli, Palomar College finished fifth in the team standings at the California Community College state wrestling championships last weekend at Sierra College in Rocklin.
Anderson (Westview High) placed third at 184 pounds. Porras (Granite Hills High) finished fourth at 141 pounds and Natcelli was fourth at 174 pounds. Anderson, Porras and Natcelli were named All-Americans.
Jakar Carter (Helix High) placed fifth at 197 pounds and Nick Rodriguez (Cathedral Catholic High) was eighth at 149 pounds.
Women’s track and field
Freshman Nadia Miechowicz (San Pasqual High) recorded two marks that rank second in program history as Cal State San Marcos opened the indoor track season at the Nevada Silver State Invitational in Reno.
She began her collegiate career with a time of 24.63 seconds in the 200-meter dash, finishing 12th out of 72.
Both Miechowicz and Orchid Concha ran the 60-meter dash in 7.78 seconds, tying for the second-fastest time in program history. Kristin Cole clocked the eighth-fastest time of 8.0 seconds.
