Weekend college report: San Diego’s women’s volleyball teams stay hot

San Diego’s women’s college volleyball programs seem to be catching fire at the same time.

San Diego State and the University of San Diego each ran their streaks to six straight wins, while Point Loma Nazarene climbed to fifth in the NCAA Division II rankings and Mesa College to second among California’s community colleges.

The Aztecs (11-6, 6-0 Mountain West) defeated New Mexico 3-1 and UNLV 3-0 in home matches last week. Taylor Underwood led the Aztecs with 26 kills in the two victories. Amber Keen had 12 blocks, Kendall Mairs had 40 assists and 26 digs. Zara Stewart had 34 digs.

USD (13-4, 6-0 WCC) defeated Portland 3-0 and Oregon State 3-1 at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. Nemo Beach had 36 kills and Isabel Clark 25 in the two wins. Kali Engeman had 12 blocks, while Kylie Munday had 82 assists and 21 digs. Olivia Bennett had 26 digs.

Beach was named the West Coast Conference offensive player of the week and Munday was the WCC setter of the week.

PLNU (14-2, 4-0) defeated Westmont 3-0 in a PacWest Conference match at home Saturday after losing 3-1 at 27th-ranked Fresno Pacific in non-conference play.

Mesa College (18-1, 7-0) extended its winning streak to 15 straight matches with straight-sets wins over 16th-ranked Miramar College and San Diego City College. Grossmont College (7-0, 8-7) also remained undefeated in Pacific Coast Athletic Conference play and is ranked 21st in the state and is followed by Miramar (5-2, 14-6) and 18th-ranked Palomar (4-3, 11-5).

JC football

Backup quarterback Ty McCutcheon completed 22 of 31 passes for 281 yards and Caleb Blocker gained 124 yards and scored on three of his 15 carries as Southwestern College defeated Palomar College 38-24. Tyler Becker (Del Norte High School), Clint Thomas Jr. and Josiah Jefferson (Mater Dei Catholic) all caught five passes for the Jaguars (6-0, 3-0). Running back Chris Bausch (Fallbrook) gained 97 yards and scored a touchdown on 21 carries for Palomar (1-5, 0-3).

• El Camino College defeated Mesa College 28-14, while West Los Angeles College scored a 14-13 win at Grossmont College when the Griffins (4-2, 0-1) failed on a two-point conversion attempt going for the win with 1:45 to play. Mesa fell to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in conference play.

Men’s golf

SDSU’s Tyler Kowack (Canyon Crest Academy) birdied the final hole to win the individual title of the Marquette Intercollegiate in Wisconsin, leading the Aztecs to a runner-up finish in the team standings. Kowack finished at two-under 214, while teammate Chanachon Chokprajakchat tied for 10th at 222.

Women’s golf

Chloe Rahn (213) won the individual title, Kiara Hernandez (215) finished second, Carmelia Carlisi (219) tied for third and Abby Sickles and Avery Foster tied for fifth (222) to lead Cal State San Marcos won the team title by 22 strokes over PLNU at the Lady Bulldog Desert Classic in Palm Desert.

Men’s soccer

Sixth-ranked Portland defeated 12th-ranked USD 2-1 in Oregon, with Godwin Antwi scoring the Toreros’ goal.

• San Diego State (5-7-1, 1-1-1) lost to Grand Canyon 1-0 at home and tied UNLV 1-1. Terence Okoeguale scored in the 81st minute against the Rebels.

• PLNU (6-2-1, 2-0) defeated Concordia 3-2 in Irvine.

• Cisco Avila scored two goals as Cal State University San Marcos (3-4-3, 2-1) beat Cal State East Bay 5-3 at home.

• German forward Jakub Kozlowski had two goals and an assist as Palomar College (4-0-1, 6-3-3) defeated 14th-ranked San Diego City College to remain atop the PCAC standings. Reigning state champion and 10th-ranked Cuyamaca (3-1-1, 9-1-2) and MiraCosta (3-1-1, 4-2-6) are tied for second.

Women’s soccer

Freshman forward Amanda Anders (Mission Hills High) topped ESPN’s “SportsCenter” highlights with a 40-yard goal that led USD to a 2-1 win at Portland. The Toreros then lost 4-1 at Oregon State to fall to 4-2-6 overall and 1-2-2 in league play.

• San Diego State tied UNLV 2-2 and beat San Jose State 3-2. Alexys Ocampo scored a goal in each game and added an assist  for the Aztecs (6-2-5, 2-0-3).

• UC San Diego beat UC Davis 1-0 and tied Hawaii 1-1. The Tritons are 3-5-6 overall and 1-2-2 in league play.

• PLNU tied Concordia 0-0 in Irvine. Goalkeeper Julia Pinnell has turned in four straight shutouts for the Sea Lions (4-2-2, 1-0-1), who are ranked eighth in the region.

• CSUSM’s Emma Calvillo was named the California Collegiate Athletic Association’s defensive player of the week.

Women’s swimming

After defeating Pepperdine 83-59 in a dual meet, San Diego State’s women’s swimming and diving team captured its first team championship at the Fresno State Invitational after eight straight runner-up finishes.

Cross country

CSUSM’s Angela McManus finished ninth out of 335 runners at Saturday’s Lewis Crossover at Romeoville, Ill. McManus covered 6 kilometers in 21 minutes, 49.13 seconds.

Tennis

San Diego State senior Jo-Yee Chan and freshman Vessa Turley scored four wins in women’s doubles to claim the Mountain West qualifier title for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Masters Tournament in November. Chan and Turley defeated Aztec teammates Ninon Martinache and Gloria Alogo in the semifinals.

• The SDSU men’s doubles teams of Lars Johann/Aleksi Lofman and Imran Daniel Hazli/Brock Anderson both lost in the ITA Masters quarterfinals.
